Mitogaku
Deeply drawn to sentiments of Japanese superiority alongside anti-western hostility, Nariaki Tokugawa is a prominent figure in the Bakufu government. He runs military operations known as "bird hunting" to train the Japanese army against hostile threats. In regards to politics he is hostile to the Mayahana faith, believing Shintoism is crucial to Japanese superiority. He has been known for controversies such as attempting to turn Buddhist statues into cannons, all in the name of national defense.
Even now however, he remains such a divisive figure that the shogun Tokugawa Ienari has been forced to play a middle ground between appeasement and resistance towards Nariaki Tokugawa.
