Valentín Gómez Farías

The former President of Mexico returned from exile in 1840 and has since resumed the Presidency, following the Election of 1845.

Gomez spent several years in the United States since his 1834 ouster, advocating for the resumption of democratic institutions in Mexico and for greater alignment with France.  But he returned just as Santa Anna's deal with the United States blew up the ruling conservative coalition; and began a relentless and successful push for the resumtion of free elections.

He won the Presidential eleciotn of 1845 with 46% of the vote in a three-way race.  He has already resumed a reform plan meant secularize Mexican institutions, though far more moderate than his first try and with constant reassurances and olive branches to the Catholic Church.  But protests are already common, and his admistration is on shaky ground.
