Liberal Leader
One of the younger members of Portugals prominent landholding aristocracy, Rangel was notable as a protege of the pro-Napoleon Pereira, and one of the higher ranking traditional aristocrats to support Maria in the Liberal Wars. Despite his liberal ideology, he was well known for treating his serfs-turned-tenants with cruelty, and remained very much a noble and landholder politically and socially. His status and relative sympathies earned him political power and position as a counterweight to the more powerful and numerous Miguelist nobles.
