Biography

Howell Ravenel is an anomaly of a Southerner by all counts. Born in Delaware, Ravenel was the inheritor of a small fortune. While others might have invested into plantations in Arkansas or Mississippi, Ravenel instead took his fortune with him to Guyana, buying up much of the land seized when the slave revolt was put down and developing it into an array of plantations and rice fields.

Another surprise from him was that, despite owning a vast sum of slaves across his plantations, Ravenel has railed against the policy of participating in the transatlantic slave trade that is championed by the Democratic Party. He has even gone so far as to declare himself an avowed liberal and believer in Texan abolition as modeled after the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 in the United Kingdom.

While such views would see him ridiculed and dismissed from Texan politics, that's difficult to do against the man that owns over half of Texas' GDP. The affluence of his wealth and the liberal leanings of Georgetown were enough for Ravenel to win the 1834 Mayoral Election. Only time will tell if Ravenel's efforts pay off, or if he fades into obscurity.
