Over the past ten years, significant economic change under former Grand Muftī 'Aqim al-Bukhārī has upended economic relations in the Emīrate of Bukhārā. Among these is the introduction of corporate governance, a system unrecognized in Islamic law and unheard of in Central Asia, until now. The Anjuman-e Damdārān-e Bukhārā, or "Association of Herdsmen of Bukhārā," has been entrusted by the Crown with a monopoly over cotton plantations and pastureland, the cornerstones of Bukhārān agriculture to this point.
