Peace Signed with the Marathas, but gains were meager

News has reached London that, after years of hard and costly campaigning, Britain has triumphed against the Maratha Confederacy in India. The Honorable East India Company and the Maratha chiefs have settled on land concessions in favor of Britain, but officials describe the gains as "considerably more modest" than what had been hoped when hostilities commenced.

Military men attribute the disappointing outcome to the long delay in mounting the campaign. Plans for a reckoning with the Marathas had been under consideration for decades, but the drain upon the treasury occasioned by the coalition wars, especially the final campaign against Russia and Prussia in which Britain spent significantly in support of France, forced the Company and the Crown to postpone action.

That time, it is now clear, was spent well by our adversaries, whose armies are reportedly much closer to European standards than they had once been. In addition, worries about more conflicts in the lowlands following the Belgian Revolution also prevented the deployment of parts of the British Army to India. The result was a victory, but an underwhelming one.
