Today, an agreement was signed which has promised to resolve the Orient Crisis we have been following for the better part of this decade. Reports from the region have said that Egypt's army has sent the bulk of their forces away from the border of the Ottoman Empire, as their former base in Adana is returned to the Ottoman Empire.
A statement from the Sultan himself was recorded by one of our field reporters:
Signed on the 2nd of August, 1840, this Constantinople Convention puts an end to the Eastern Crisis, with Muhammad Ali returning the control of Crete and Adana to Ottoman officials.
In exchange, Sultan Mahmud, in his eternal and boundless benevolence, grants Muhammad Ali and all his descendants forevermore the title of Khedive, as well as confirm the Territories of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Transjordan to be due compensation for the loss of Egyptian fleet in the Greek War of Independence.
The signing of these protocols have ended with a ceremony in which Khedive Muhammad Ali has reaffirmed his loyalty and oath of fealty to Sultan Mahmud, and has been officially ordained as the Khedive.
Several powers in Europe have approved the resolution of the crisis in peace, though some lament that the Ottoman Empire, called the Sick Man of Europe by some, appears to have stabilized their core territories. Those in Wallachia, long known to be outright hostile to rule by the Ottoman Empire, have made their disapproval quite public. However, the nearby nation of Serbia has given their approval to this measure.
