The Greek Awakening

1841 · The Long Thaw

Eastern Europe & Balkans Greece flagGreece

If you asked someone not from Greece then it started a few months ago. Yet in truth it began back in the 1820s with the Greek wars of independence. Then it was the ideas of throwing away Turk oppression after centuries and a desire to protect their culture and heritage that they had tried to erase. Yet now the people still cry out, yet the message has only changed a little. If one walks the streets in Athens one will notice it, the way the people hold themselves, the way they interact with one another. The quiet looks of they give to anyone suspected to be Turk. Perhaps it was a natural consequence of the times, of the way they gained their independence, or perhaps it was due to the recent enfranchisement of their people by the king. Yet the Greek people have taken to it all with a drive not seen before. They march in the streets supporting one group or another, as for the first time since they gained their independence do the people take to politics. Their support pushes many reforms into contention much to some aristocrat’s annoyance.

Yet perhaps the greatest effects were the idea of a united Greek people. That due to their shared heritage and religion that they were all Greeks together. With this the thought of so many of their brothers and sisters being held under Turkic tyranny became almost unbearable for the people in Greece. Every day voices grew louder in support of their countrymen in occupied Greece. They had won one independence war, and now they should help their brethren win their own so that they might finally reunite into the one true Greek state. Rallies were held, banners created and in secrete communication with resistance groups in occupied Greece was shared. Great thinkers and Orators pointed back to the great classical works of the past as an example of how the Greek peoples used to live and how this land used to be there’s before the Ottomans came. With the great fires that had ravaged much of the land in  occupied Greece it was no wonder that so many were raising in discontent, indeed such a thing may have contributed to the growing sense of a national identity.

For its part the Greek government had made no moves yet, though Otto and his ministers are very much aware of the situation. Indeed, much of his own government is Greek and even Otto himself is said to have some amount of sympathy for his peoples struggles. While right this moment does not seem the time, he knows that one day the sick man of Europe will crumble at last, and that day will be in part brought about to Greek hands braking the wheel. Whether that be in martyrdom or through strength he is not really sure, though he hopes for the latter. Though while he does not know when, Otto is sure that this is just the start, for now that the Greek peoples are aware he doubts that there is anything one can do to suppress them fully.
