Morazán Wins Re-Election

El Salvador, February 2nd, 1835 · The Shattered Congress

El Iris Salvadoreño

In a special election that provided few surprises for the good liberals of this great federation, Francisco Morazán captured this special election - the first taking place here, in this bastion that is San Salvador - with nearly 80% of the electoral vote.
Morazán seemed confident in victory on this calm and gentle winter afternoon, presenting with assured-ness his outstretched hand as each elector stepped forward to present his vote. The second-most votes were claimed by written electoral slips for 'no candidate,' leaving the chamber with no presumptive vice president.  Several men left the proceedings early, no doubt eager to return to their constituencies and work towards advancing liberal greatness and federal unity. Morazán faced no serious challengers in the race, a sure testament to an evolving friendliness and appreciation for him within both the liberal and conservative factions.

President-Elect Morazán will no doubt continue to advance the republican and equitable policy that characterized his first full term, and should be gladdened that his choice of interim president in José Gregorio Salazar did not interrupt this policy. Morazán's first task will surely be to bring the country some restful stability, given the disruptive elements in the conservative political base: those including the small, minority partisans of the royalist, pro-Spanish, pro-English, clerical, centralist, separatist, moderate, and religious factions. There is no doubt as well that Morazán already has a plan to combat the widespread cholera epidemic that has already claimed the lives of so many, including the late President-Elect Valle. To these ends, we are happy to report that Morazán has already begun mobilizing the military, comfortable in his role as commander-in-chief.

The Salvadoran Iris looks forward to another glorious few years under the steady hand of Francisco Morazán. With another liberal victory, the future of Central America and all her daughter provinces is doubtless one of greatness and unity.
