Maroons Crushed, First Presidential Election Next Year, American Immigration, Rumors of Amazon Gold

Paramaribo, Texas, December 18th, 1835 · The Shattered Congress

The Texan Herald

Earlier today Interim President David Burnet of four years has made a public address of great importance to our nascent republic. He declared the existential threat of the lawless Maroons extinguished as the last of them have been rooted out and clasped in irons, to be sold to the fair people of Texas and marking the completion of Burnet's mandate as Interim President. He went on to announce that the first election of the President and Vice-President of Texas would take place on September Fifth of next year, with all white men entitled to a vote pending the final draft of the Constitution of Texas. No doubt candidates across the nation are preparing to campaign for the positions of President and Vice-President, with the expected darlings of the public being General Houston, Interim Secretary of War Lamar, and Interim President Burnet.

However, those campaigning may find themselves having to appeal to broader amount of voters than they initially expected after a recent census shows large amounts of immigration from the United States. While the old Dutch, English, and French planation owners still hold some clout, they are being left increasingly obsolete as new plantations founded by settlers and staffed with freshly acquired slaves challenge their former relevance. However, not every settler finds themselves in a plantation. Many have taken to aggregating around new Urban centers and their industries, such as the emerging shipping hub Georgetown, the metalworks in Paramaribo, and the rising lumber industry around Cayenne. News of gold discovered on lands once controlled by the Maroons have also drawn some settlers deeper into the Amazonian frontier. While the only known gold mine was seized by the Interim Government during its campaign against the Maroons, it is not home to the only deposit if the rumors are to be believed.

In the election to come,  it is likely each candidate shall have to address how Texas has been shaped since its peopled touched down in Georgetown as our forebears did in America over two-hundred years ago and argue their vision for the future of Texas. A vision that may well shape the very soul of our nation for our children and our children's children.
