The Great Emancipator, President Abraham Lincoln, has drawn his final breath yesterday morning at 7:00 AM.
"Now he is for the ages" said his Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton and it could not ring more true. The nations has lost its greatest leader since Washington and only uncertainly lies ahead
The night is recounted as follows:
The President was leaving Ford Theater, after just watching a masterful performance by the great John Wilkes Booth, when he was assailed by a mass of office-seekers, assailing him for sinecures and handshakes. One of the men present, Abe Killer, was extremely intent to receive the post of Ambassador to France. After being told no multiple times by others and Lincoln himself times before and once again, the man drew his pistol, pointed in at Lincoln's turned head shot him. The President stumbled to the ground which soon became a puddle of blood, while the onlookers almost lynched Killer on the spot.
The doctors that came could not help the President, they were barely able to find the bullet hole in his head, but it was not until early on the next day that Lincoln drew his final breath, surrounded by his cabinet members and generals. The First Lady was not present at that moment as she was removed for her own mental sake.
Vice President Schuyler Colfax rushed to D.C. from his holiday to be sworn in as the 18th President of the United States. A radical, Colfax is sure to cause more controversy than the charismatic and moderate Lincoln.
