Protests as War Stalemates

As the year draws to a close, there is little cheer to be found among His Majesty's subjects regarding the war in Europe. Dispatches from the Rhine and Poland describe armies mired in mud and frost, dug in against each other without being able to make significant gains. What was supposed to be a sw…

Excerpt from a Secret Diary

News has reached Italy that Bernadotte has entered the war on the side of Russia and Prussia. I do not pretend to understand whatever madness was put forward to compel his entry into the war. Perhaps some promise of land, as he seemed rather concerned about Pomerania at the Congress. Regardless of …

The Failure of the Congress

The Congress of Vienna was convened for a noble purpose: that a group of wise and intelligent men might bandage the wounds Napoleon wrought upon Europe with peace and justice. Had circumstances been otherwise, I believe that goal could have been accomplished. But sadly, the circumstances being what…

Shots Fired in Krakow!

Vienna, November 2nd, 1814 · The Shattered Congress

The Wiener Zeitung

The Wiener Zeitung has confirmed a limited skirmish in the city of Krakow between Austrian soldiers and the Russian occupiers.

According to military sources, a routine Austrian patrol was refused entrance to the city by the Russian garrison commander, citing Tsar Alexander I's claim to the throne of Poland. It is unclear who fired the first bullet, but multiple Austrian soldiers were wounded in the ensuing exchange.

With the Russians and Prussians fortifying their positions in occupied Poland and Saxony, and no news from the Congress, it seems increasingly likely that the defeat of Napoleon has not secured peace in Europe.
