In a shocking turn of events, one of the packet ships that made port in the city yesterday carried none other than Napoleon Bonaparte, former Emperor of the French, accompanied by his brother Joseph and a small party of loyal companions.
Word of his arrival spread like wildfire, and soon a crowd of thousands had gathered along the waterfront, cheering to the Emperor. To those of us who recall the indignities of British impressment and the recent war, Bonaparte is seen as a hero, so it is no surprise that his arrival was met with universal acclaim.
Reportedly, the Bonaparte brothers seek to make a new life for themselves in America, including petitioning the Austrian court to allow the reunification of the Bonaparte family, as the Emperor's wife and child remain in Vienna.
President Madison's office declined to comment.
