After having refused the request of Muhammad Ali Pasha for Syria to compensate the destruction of the Egyptian Navy at the hands of the Great Powers' intervention in Greece, the Sultan Mahmut Osmanoglu has awoken to news that a detachment of the Egyptian Army, led by Muhammad Ali, has besieged the city of Akka by land and sea. Taking this as a declaration of war, the Sultan hurried to send forces to intervene in this situation, though he would face an uphill battle facing the reformed military of Egypt, as his own reforms had been unsuccessful in introducing modern drill and conscription to the Ottoman Army.
