The Göta Canal has seen its first ship pass through it, onlookers cheered. Many economists believe the Sound Toll from Denmark will be greatly alleviated by this grand canal. The original designer, Baltzer Von Platen was sadly unable to live to see such splendor, but all who have witnessed it are hopeful for continuing industrialization and economic prosperity.
In a speech, King Charles XIV John said "a canal is not something you think of as spectacular, but it is without a doubt one of the most important things humanity has created. With this project finished Sweden may know look to other spectacular inventions"
