General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna has begun the long march south, following a successful campaign in Nuevo Mexico that ended with a new treaty being signed with eleven separate Apache elders. The planned year-long campaign against the Indian has concluded in under four months.
Since the Slavers’ Rebellion of 1830 Comanche and Apache raids have been more frequent. The mass exodus of settlers left the villages across El Norte sparsely populated and poorly-defended, with many forts lacking the men to patrol the plains or respond to crises with speed. Raiding parties would make off with horses and cattle by the hundreds, leaving Mexican farmers destitute, if they were not killed outright in the raids. General Antonio Lopez de Santa enlisted 1800 men for a campaign to pacify the Indian, before more innocent blood was spilt.
Several skirmishes with the barbaric Comanche resulted in decisive Mexican victory, before Santa Anna and his men moved further west. The smaller Apache tribes have been frequent allies and enablers of the Comanche, providing yearly tributes and allowing free passage of warbands through their lands, and infrequently mustered smaller raids across Chihuahua and Nuevo Mexico themselves. But when they heard the genius commander Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna marched for their lands, the disparate tribes presented their various chieftains to collectively negotiate a peace.
Santa Anna, being the magnanimous statesman that he is, agreed to hear them out. Several days of discussion followed before the Treaty of Mescalero was agreed by all parties.
Apache will withdraw from all territories east of the Nueces River. Raids against Mexican settlements will cease. All tribes will forbid their warriors from joining or attaching to raids initiated by Comancheria. Traders on both sides will have the right to travel and enter settlements unmolested. Catholic missionaries will have freedom of movement as well, and the right to spread the word of Jesus Christ in Indian settlements.
With Santa Anna’s personal blessing the Treaty of Mescalero is expected to be ratified without complication. More celebrations are planned for the successful campaign. The legendary general Santa Anna has tried his hand at diplomacy and peacemaking, and sure enough, he’s amazing at that too.
